Workshop on the role of reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) in climate change

EcoNile Organization, in collaboration with the Forest National Corporation in Sudan, organized a specialized workshop on the role of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) in addressing climate change. The workshop aimed to raise the awareness and capacity of the participants on the concept and benefits of REDD+, which is a framework under the Paris Agreement to incentivize countries to reduce deforestation and forest degradation by receiving results-based payments. The workshop was presented by Dr. Sayeda Ali, an expert in forestry and climate change, and Dr. Khalda Abuzaid, a natural resources and environmental consultant.

The workshop covered the following topics: REDD+, REDD+ phases, drivers of deforestation, and the role of forests in general. The participants learned about the causes and impacts of deforestation and forest degradation on the climate, biodiversity, and livelihoods, and how REDD+ can help address these challenges. The workshop also explained the steps and requirements for implementing REDD+ activities, such as developing a national strategy, establishing a reference level, monitoring forest carbon stocks, and reporting and verifying emission reductions. Besides, it highlighted the role of forests in providing ecosystem services, enhancing resilience, and supporting sustainable development.

The workshop brought together individuals from government institutions, academia, civil society, and the private sector, creating a dynamic space for dialogue and knowledge exchange. Participants engaged actively with the material, contributing thoughtful questions, sharing experiences, and offering insights on how REDD+ can be effectively integrated into Sudan’s climate and environmental policies.

Their feedback reflected strong appreciation for the clarity, relevance, and depth of the workshop content, as well as enthusiasm for future capacity‑building initiatives in the field of climate action and sustainable forest management.
